Scrum Master

The Role

The Scrum Master role will join our newly formed Software Delivery team, initially working within a single squad. The scrum master will facilitate and champion agile software development processes across the squad through coaching and mentoring the squad, identifying and eliminating impediments, and promoting the use of standards and best practices. You will ensure smooth operation of agile processes and activities, and be responsible for leading daily stand-ups, backlog prioritization meetings, and retrospectives.

Your squad will typically work on customer projects delivering Proof of Concepts (POC’s) within limited time periods.

Responsibilities

  • Organise and facilitate agile activities and ceremonies including daily stand-up meetings, sprint reviews, retrospectives, sprint and release planning, and product backlog refinement sessions.
  • Ensure that all meetings are positive, productive, stay on topic, and are kept within the timebox.
  • Collaborate closely with the product owner to manage the backlog.
  • Effectively manage user story estimation and forecasting.
  • Champion and facilitate adoption of agile standards, tools, and best practices.
  • Coach the squad on established standards and best practices (e.g., quality, governance, architecture etc) to minimize risk in the project.
  • Proactively identify and resolve impediments enabling the squad to progress at pace.
  • Communicate with a wide variety of stakeholders (internal and external) to ensure transparency into delivery progress, challenges, and risks.
  • Utilize team feedback and metrics (e.g., quality, delivery, cadence, etc.) to identify areas of opportunity and work with the squad to continuously improve.
  • Coach the squad to improve collaboration and self-management, promoting healthy interactions both within the team and with external stakeholders.
  • Support the squad in using agile planning and development tools such as JIRA and Confluence.
  • Experiment with new practices and frameworks to improve squad outcomes.
  • Deep understanding of reporting and analytical data, in order to provide regular analysis of burndown charts and other portfolio planning tools to understand what gets built and at what cadence, to help improve squad efficiencies
  • Actively participate in learning opportunities such as communities of practice or conferences to improve skills and better support the team.
  • Contribute to the advancement and improvement of agile practices within Leighton and our customers.

Knowledge Skills & Abilities

  • Deep knowledge of agile practices, frameworks, and techniques.
  • Excellent people and project management skills.
  • Coaching skills and ability to motivate teams.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with agile planning and development tools (e.g. JIRA, Confluence).
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex technical information in a condensed manner to various stakeholders verbally and in writing.
  • 5-7 years experience working in agile development
  • Circa 5 years experience as a scrum master
  • Agile, scrum, or project management certification preferred (e.g. CSM, CSP, PMP, SAFe).
  • Background in engineering, testing or business analysis is preferred
