Role Description

As a senior backend developer you will contribute to the whole software development lifecycle - from initial architecting, through development of features and automated tests, to the configuration of deployment pipelines and hosting environments. You will support others within the team and take an engaged part in ensuring the project's success.

You will primarily work with PHP and Laravel, but we provide opportunities to expand/utilise other backend technologies as required - we have other projects developed with technologies such as, AWS Lambda, Cloudflare Workers, Node.js - it’s important to pick the right tool for the job

The Opportunity

  • Full-time, permanent Backend Engineer working on platform backend APIs
  • Interpret client requirements and suggest development approaches
  • Recognise problems and be able to arrive at a solution either independently, or with other colleagues
  • Participate in agile ceremonies such as sprint planning meetings (or be prepared to learn)
  • Work with design and UX colleagues to successfully implement app designs
  • Contribute to the continual development of our internal development processes
  • Assist with the technical architecture and approach for projects
  • Contribute to the estimation of time and delivery of projects

Tech Stuff

  • Proficiency in OO PHP and Laravel, ideally up to date with recent changes
  • Proficiency in database design, writing SQL queries and optimisation techniques (MySQL in particular)
  • Strong familiarity with object oriented design patterns and system design
  • Knowledge and experience of unit and integration testing
  • API design and development experience, with a focus on REST principles
  • Ability to estimate technical effort required to design and implement new functionality
  • Ability to debug and fix complex issues
  • Experience using git
  • Experience using unix (desktop / server admin) - although you’re free to use any operating system you like for local development
