After the recent layoffs from large companies such as Spotify, Twitter and Amazon, the question of whether a career in tech is stable is a common debate.

It could be that you’re just starting out in tech and you’re wondering what the next steps are. If you have a passion for this industry, it’s only natural to wonder what the future holds before investing your time, money, and energy.

1. High Salaries

One benefit of working in this career is the opportunity for progression and high salaries.

It could be that you start off as a software developer with no experience. Initially, you may be on a salary of around £18,000. However, with time and experience, you could be earning up to £43,000.

Freelancers within tech are in high demand, so you’ll be able to develop a strong clientele if you choose to pursue this sector.

2. Valued Profession

With the rise of many AI systems, such as ChatGP, many employers, employees and businesses are concerned about the effect technology will have on the job market.

From the scaling back of receptionist clerks and factory workers to the onset of technological advancements, our approach to jobs, recruitment and education is different.

However, recent statistics show that there is no cause for worry.

According to the LinkedIn report, which outlined the 25 fastest-growing job titles in the UK, the demand for talented technicians still exists.

For example, jobs such as cloud engineers, software engineers and machine learning engineers are more in demand than ever.

Even with our heavy reliance on technology, the need for individuals with an understanding of these models is still prominent.

According to the Bureau of Labour Statistics, computer and information technology employment is expected to grow 11% from 2019 to 2029. This growth is much faster than any other occupation, suggesting as long as technology continues to increase, a career in tech will always exist.

3. Job Stability

In October 2022, Twitter cut off 4,400 employees.

Combined with the added pressure of the recessing and rising costs, many companies are protecting their profits and cutting off long-term staff.

Now that we’ve seen other large companies such as Amazon, Meta and Spotify cut jobs, the future is unclear whether more jobs are going to be sacrificed.

Despite this alarming statistic, tech remains one of the most buoyant sectors for jobs. Given the complexity of many roles, tech professionals continue to be some of the most valued members of an organisation.

4. Career Progression

Whether you have no experience, or you’ve worked for over 10 years, if you demonstrate dedication, hard work and initiative, you’ll be able to progress within a tech company.

Additionally, there is a wide range of specialities within the tech sector, such as AWS Cloud, WordPress, and DevOps.

This gives you several opportunities to upskill and improve in a specific skill, which will allow you to access a higher salary with extra responsibility.

One of the biggest challenges of working in tech is the pace of change, as you will be expected to keep up with the latest advancements.

This may be a challenge for some people, as technology is constantly evolving and changing, making it different to any regular sector.

2. Competition

If you’re just starting out in tech, getting started can be overwhelming given the range of experience. For example, some of your peers may have many years of experience behind them, allowing them to access top-level roles.

Taking time to organise your calendar to ensure you prioritise time for breaks in your working day is essential and will allow you to stay focused.

4. Continuous Learning

Technology is always changing, meaning continuous learning is a large part of the job.

It’s not unusual to feel challenged in your tech role or outside your comfort zone. While some people may enjoy the varied work, others may prefer stability and familiarity.

Although most careers have their own degree of challenges, tech is notoriously complex and difficult, making it a highly stressful job.

On the other hand, if you’re a fast learner that hates monotonous tasks, then a career in tech is great for you.
