Data Analysts collect, organise, and study data to produce reports providing insight for businesses or organisations.
A data analyst will use a range of tools and techniques to identify and collect data for analysis. Once data has been identified and migrated a data analyst will often use multiple methodologies and programmes to analyse this data with the output of either answering a question or summarising results often from multiple data sets. They take responsibility for producing reports and presentations around findings for stakeholders and users as well as informing decision making.
In addition to this Data Analysts are often involved in project planning and stakeholder relationships and can work individually or as part of a larger team depending on the scale of their employer and project.
Data Analysts need to have strong analytical skills and an excellent eye for detail due to the intricacy of the work they do. They’ll often need to have a high level of strategic and critical thinking skills alongside the ability to work innovatively and demonstrate resourcefulness.
The technical knowledge needed for a data analyst will vary depending on the employer but will always require the ability to produce strong presentations as well as utilising databases and often data modelling programmes.
